The Journey of Pregnancy and Childbirth

Pregnancy and childbirth place an enormous physical and emotional burden on women. Even a brief overview includes many of the challenges listed below.

In Japan, awareness and support for these challenges are still not yet sufficient.

Pregnancy is truly a series of miracles.

In fact, preparation for nurturing new life begins long before a woman becomes pregnant—even before she herself is born. Remarkably, while a future mother is still a fetus (up to approximately 16 weeks of gestation), some of the cells that may eventually become part of her future child have already begun to develop.

The journey leading to childbirth spans many years and involves numerous physical and emotional challenges.
During pregnancy, organs such as the uterus and hormonal balance undergo significant temporary changes to support the baby’s development. After delivery, the body gradually returns to its pre-pregnancy state. This recovery period is called the postpartum period (puerperium) and generally lasts for 6–8 weeks after childbirth.

Preparing Your Body Before and During Early Pregnancy

STEP 01. Maintain a Nutritious Diet

Consume high-quality protein whenever possible, preferably from minimally processed sources. Adequate intake of healthy fats, folic acid, and iron is also essential.

STEP 02. Avoid Overexertion

Excessive physical activity at work or during your personal time can lead to fatigue. Overexertion may contribute to decreased blood protein and hemoglobin levels. Avoid excessive exercise and allow your body adequate time to recover.

STEP 03. Improve Blood Circulation

Focus on improving circulation to your internal organs rather than simply increasing muscle blood flow. Improving posture, practicing proper breathing techniques, taking warm baths, and getting sufficient sleep can help reduce muscle tension and promote healthy circulation.

Before reaching the stable stage of pregnancy, a woman’s ability to cope with physical and emotional stress is reduced.

As you may know, attention should also be given to preventing infections such as toxoplasmosis and rubella before and during pregnancy. By following the three recommendations above, vital signs—including heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and respiration—can remain more stable, helping maintain homeostasis and overall health.

During the preconception period and the early stages of pregnancy, professional care in addition to self-care is often beneficial. The most appropriate maintenance program varies depending on each individual’s physical condition and needs.

Building a Healthy Body from Mid-Pregnancy Through the Postpartum Period

STEP 01. Prevent Muscle Weakness

Avoid yoga and excessive aerobic exercise, as they may not be appropriate during this period.
Practice proper posture and perform exercises such as Pilates under appropriate guidance.
Aim for a weekly physical activity level of approximately 23–30 Ex.

※ Daily activities such as household chores and work are included in your total activity level. Please consult our staff for personalized advice.

STEP 02. Maintain Proper Joint Alignment

Improper pelvic adjustment may be harmful. Be sure to receive assessment from licensed healthcare professionals and choose facilities capable of providing appropriate medical evaluation and intervention. During late pregnancy and after childbirth, hormones such as relaxin and estrogen make the joints particularly vulnerable.

STEP 03. Receive Appropriate Medical Checkups and Prepare a Supportive Environment

The risk of gestational diabetes and anemia increases during pregnancy and after childbirth. When choosing a maternity hospital, consider factors such as the facility’s experience with epidural labor and whether external cephalic version (ECV) is available for breech pregnancies. Since emotional instability can occur after delivery, it is also important to establish a strong family support system through early communication.

Childbirth and the postpartum period can be among the most challenging yet joyful times in a woman’s life. However, the reality is that it is often difficult for a mother to make this period truly fulfilling through her own efforts alone.

For the past several years, I have used Medical Japan’s facilities in the Tachikawa area to manage my own health. They provide precise physical care and advice that support me in my daily clinical work and sports conditioning. Their services have become indispensable for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Everyday physical fatigue and emotional stress can often lead to poor health, and regular physical and mental maintenance can also help prevent illness.
There are two notable characteristics of Medical Japan’s staff.
First, many of them have previous experience working in hospitals or clinics.
Second, many staff members hold multiple nationally recognized qualifications, including those of physical therapist, judo therapist, acupuncturist, and licensed massage and shiatsu practitioner.
Their greatest strength is that patients can entrust their bodies to qualified professionals and receive reliable treatment techniques in a safe and reassuring environment.
For self-employed professionals like myself, another benefit is that the cost of acupuncture and massage treatments performed by nationally qualified practitioners may be recorded as a business expense when they are part of health management.
For self-employed individuals whose physical health is essential to their work, this may provide additional reassurance when receiving treatment.
Medical Japan is an excellent long-term healthcare partner, providing thoughtful and attentive support to every individual throughout their life.

Preconception Care

The Role of Preconception Care Throughout Life
(Quoted and adapted from the WHO)

Conception refers to becoming pregnant and the beginning of a new life in the womb.

Preconception care means that women and couples who may consider pregnancy in the future take the opportunity to review and improve their health and lifestyle.

This care is not only intended for women who are actively planning a pregnancy. Its goals are to improve the health of women and couples, increase their chances of having a healthy baby, and help women and their future families lead healthier lives.

In Japan, the first Preconception Care Center was established at the National Center for Child Health and Development.
The Preconception Care Center aims to provide all women and couples who may consider pregnancy in the future with a comprehensive assessment of their current health. It also gives them the opportunity to consult specialists from various fields regarding their daily lives and overall health. Particular emphasis is placed on consultations concerning future pregnancy and childbirth for people who currently have medical conditions or who experienced illness during childhood. The center also supports couples who have difficulty conceiving and couples who have not achieved the pregnancy outcomes they hoped for.

The center also gathers information about pregnancy and childbirth involving medical conditions for which information has previously been limited. It provides current information that everyone should know before becoming pregnant.
